McLean and Chandler win the 2019 COBRA PUMA Junior Championship

For the second year around in a row Heather McLean from the Ken-Wo Golf Club has won the COBRA PUMA Junior Girls Championship at the Truro Golf Club. The 18-year old member of the NSGA Junior Development Team and a Junior with the Wagner University Golf Team in New York, NY. This marks Heather’s eighth and final junior championship. “It’s funny that I played my first junior at Abercrombie 8-years ago and shot 143 in my first round, now I just won my second principal title.” said Heather following her round today. McLean fired a three over par 75 to finish the championship with a total of 225.
Abbey Baker 2019 Juvenile Champion
Finishing in second place, and the new COBRA PUMA Juvenile Girls (U17) Champion is Abbey Baker from Ashburn. The 14-year old Baker carded a final round 77 to with 3-day total of 237.
Finishing in third place was Sara Cumby from Ken-Wo. McLean, Baker, and Cumby will represent Nova Scotia at the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship at the Lethbridge Golf Club in Alberta from July 30-August 2.
Mark Chandler 2019 Junior Championship
After a three hole playoff, Mark Chandler from the Chester Golf Club won his first COBRA PUMA Junior Boys Championship. Chandler finished with a three-day total of 224 after firing a final round 78. The 17-year old NSGA Junior Development Team member completed his wire-to-wire in dramatic fashion after parring the final playoff to defeat Owen Mullen from the Truro Golf Club. Mullen, also a member of the NSGA Development Team, fought hard all day long and fired a two-over 73 to finish tied for the lead.

Despite coming up short for the Junior Championship, Mullen did win the COBRA PUMA Juvenile Championship (U17). Mullen finished 5-strokes, ahead of Ben Childs from Ashburn to capture his first Juvenile Championship.
Finishing alone in third place was Truro native, Isaac MacNaughton. The Truro member fired low round today after carding a one over par 72.
MacNaughton, Mullen and Chandler will represent Nova Scotia in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship at the Covered Bridge Golf Club in Hartlen, NB on Aug 12-15.

Round two recap of the 2019 COBRA PUMA Junior Championship

Baker and Ives win Bantam Championships

The NSGA crowned our first COBRA PUMA Pee-Wee (U13) Champions. Zach Gaudet of Truro Golf Club, captured his first provincial championship with a two round total of 152 (+8). Following his win when asked what the best part of his game was, Zach said “I had a really good short game and was consistent with my irons”.
Annika Parkash from Ashburn won the inaugural COBRA PUMA Pee-Wee Girls Championship.  The twelve year-old won the title after carding a two-day total of 185.  “My short game was on point and my driver was working for me.” said Parkash following her round today.
The COBRA PUMA Bantam Boys and Girls (U15) also concluded today.
The 2019 COBRA PUMA Bantam Junior Boys winner is Gavin Ives from Ashburn. The 14-year oldfired a two-day total of 158. Gavin is thanking his new putter for his win, as it “helped me save quite a few pars.”
Ashburn’s Abbey Baker successfully defended her title as the COBRA PUMA Champion. The 14-year old Provincial Development Team member carded a solid two-day total of 160 to win this years Bantam title, just a week after capturing the New Brunswick Bantam Championship.
Continuing her dominance through the Juvenile division as well, Abbey Baker is and is looking to win all three titles during tomorrows final round.
We can expect an exciting finish in our Junior Girls Division. Defending champion Heather McLean from Ken-Wo continued. two after firing a clean 74 (+2) to bring her two-day total to 150 (+6).

A lot of movement took place in the Juvenile (U17) leader board today. With a new leader, Owen Mullen of Truro Golf Club fired a 74 (+3) to take the top of the leader board heading into the final round with a total score of 151 (+9). Ashburn’s, Benjamin Childs and Kieran Allain sit close behind, tied for second and a total score of 152 (+10).
Leading the way for the Junior Boys (U19) after two rounds is Chester’s, Mark Chandler with a dominating 7-shot lead. Chandler carded a solid 74 (+3) today to maintain his lead. In second place is Craig Landry of Antigonish Golf Club with a two-day total of 153 (+11). Rounding out the top three in the Junior Boys division is Ben Callaghan of Abercrombie and Isaac MacNaughton of Truro GC, tied at 156 (+14).
Mark Chandler leads the entire boys field and Heather McLean leads the entire girls field going into round 3.
Round 3 is set to begin at 7:30am Thursday, July 11th.

The NSGA will be supporting a 3-person team to attend the Canadian Junior Boys. Each competitor will receive a $250 travel subsidy and two shirts. Competitors will be responsible for booking travel, accommodations and entry fees. The NSGA will not be sending a chaperone to nationals, nor is there funding for one.
An additional two (2) quota spots to compete in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship will be allocated based on results from the NSGA Junior Championship. There is no funding for this spot and the competitor will be responsible for all entry fee’s and travel related costs.

The 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship will be at the Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbriudge, AB, July 30-Aug 02. The NSGA will be supporting a 3 person team to attend the Canadian Junior Girls. Each competitor will receive a $1000 travel subsidy and two shirts. Competitors will be responsible for booking travel, accommodations and entry fees. The NSGA will not be sending a chaperone with the team, nor is there funding for one.

ROUND ONE RECAP OF THE 2019 COBRA PUMA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2019 Cobra Puma Junior Boys and Girls Championship got underway today at the Truro Golf Club. The best junior golfer from across Nova Scotia were blessed with great weather, and the course is in immaculate shape.

This marked the inaugural Peewee Championship (U13). Leading the Peewee boys division is Truro native, Zack Gaudet after he fired a 74 (+2). Heading into tomorrows second round, Gaudet has a comfortable lead over another Truro native, Elliot Mullen who carded an 82 (+10). Rounding out the top 3 is Rylan Sutherland of Brookfield G & CC, who csrded a steady 84 (+13).
Leading the Peewee girls division is Annika Parkash of Ashburn Golf Course, after firing an impressive 88 (+17). Ten shots back in second place is Claira Frizzell, NSPPC, at 98 (+27).

Seeking his first Bantam Boys Champion title is Tyler Lirette of Ashburn, who holds first place at 75 (+4). At a close second is yet another Ashburn competitor, Gavin Ives who fired a 78 (+7).

Lirette is also leading the Juvenile Boys division after round one. Owen Mullen of Truro Golf Club and Dimitri Mihelakos of Ashburn Golf Club both fired a steady 77 (+6) and are tied for second.
Defending Bantam Girls champion, Abbey Baker, is seeking second title after carding a strong 79 (+8). The Bantam Boys and Girls champions will be crowned following their second round, tomorrow. Baker is also leading the Juvenile Girls Championship and has a comfortable lead over Ken-Wo’s Danielle Cumby who us second place.

Leading the Junior Boys division and looking for his first junior title is Mark Chandler of Chester Golf Course, who fired a 72 (+1). In second place is Ewan Kelly Jr. of Ashburn Golf Club, who carded a first round total of 75 (+4). Third place belongs to Craig Landry from Antigonish, sitting one back of second after a 76 (+5).

The Junior Girls division is led by defending champion, Heather McLean of Ken-Wo. McLean fired a 76 (+5) today. Sara Cumby (Ken-Wo), is looking to score her first Junior Girls champion title as she sits in second place after shooting a 78 (+7). Rounding out the top 3 of this division is Haley Baker of Ashburn Golf Club, with a 81 (+10) today.

Bryce Zinck hired as the NSGA Operations Manager

Halifax, NS – The Nova Scotia Golf Association is please to announce that Bryce Zinck has been hired for the position of Manager of Operations.

“We are very excited to have Bryce joining the NSGA, he has great experience as a golf professional and administrator.” said David Campbell, Executive Director of the NSGA. “Bryce will be working to on managing various areas of operations including Communications, Finance and Events. He has deep roots in golf here and Nova Scotia and wealth of experience in the industry.”

“I am looking forward to contributing to the team at the Nova Scotia Golf Association. I am proud to join an association which has governed and protected golf in Nova Scotia since 1927. It has been a fixture in my life since I was a junior golfer and helped shape my career.” said Bryce Zinck, NSGA Operations Manager.

Bryce graduated from the Holland College, Golf Business Management Program 2010 and is PGA of Canada Class A Professional.

In 2013, Bryce began working for the ClubLink as Corporate Events Coordinator and Merchandise Manager. In 2015 he was promoted to Associate Golf Professional and Member Retention.

Originally from Kingston, Bryce grew up playing at the Paragon Golf and Country Club. He also began his golf career working there in 1999 as part of the greens crew, pro shop and junior coordinator.

Ross wins the MCT Men’s Amateur Championship

Ross completes the wire-to-wire to win the 2019 MCT Men’s Amateur 
Calvin Ross from the Kingswood Golf Club in Fredericton completed his wire-to-wire win at the 2019 MCT Men’s Amateur Championship held at the Abercrombie Golf Club. Ross, a member of the Texas State University Golf Team, fired a final round 76 to finish the 54-hole competition with a three day total of 213 (E).

This marks Ross’s second win on Nova Scotia soil. Ross won the 2017 Future Links Atlantic at Clare Golf Club. This win was just weeks before he won the 2017 Canadian Junior Championship.

“Today there was a little more pressure and I felt it on the front nine. I got suited coming down the back. I was able to get it done and I finished pretty strong.” said Ross following his round. “The course is in unbelievable shape. I know a-lot of guys from Nova Scotia that I grew up competing against. It was great to be here and compete against them in their home province.”

Ross is heading back to New Brunswick to compete in the Golf NB Men’s Amateur next week.

Two time NSGA Amateur Champion, Dave Williamson of the Ashburn Golf Club finished second overall and six strokes behind Ross. “In a weird twist of fate, I lost to a young man from New Brunswick. Over a decade ago (2008) I won my first men’s championship at Lingan and then traveled to New Brunswick where I won the Golf NB Amateur in the same year. I hope Calvin can do the same when he returns home next week.” said Williamson after the round.

Representing Team Nova Scotia at the upcoming Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship is Dave Williamson, Brett McKinnon and Kevin George. The three-man team will compete as part of the Willingdon Cup Interprovincial Competition at the Canadian Amateur next month in Halifax at the Glen Arbour Golf Club and Links of Brunello in Halifax on August 5-8.

Chandler & Arsenault Crowned 2019 Women’s Champions

2019 Women’s Amateur and Senior Champions
The 14 Wing Greenwood Golf Club has lived up to its nickname, “The Challenge”. It’s narrow fairways and fast greens tested the top female golfers in the province this weekend.
It was a like déjà vu at the 2019 Women’s Amateur & Senior Championship. In 2017 Allison Chandler and Debbie Arsenault both captured thier first Amateur and Senior Championships, respectively.
Allison Chandler, a junior at Gardner-Webb University, captured her second NSGA Women’s Amateur title today. The Chester Golf Club member managed to maintain her lead after carding a steady 80 in the final round. Chandler finished the tournament with a 242 total.
Finishing only 2-shots back of Chandler, in second place, was Stetson University sophomore and Ken-Wo member, Meghan McLean. McLean fired a tournament low  round of 79 during the final round, and finished with a 3-day total of 244.
Placing 3rd in the championship was Abercrombie’s Julia Henderson, with a three day total of 247.
Cristal Romero of Grandview won Overall Low Net for the Amateur Championship.
2019 Women’s Amateur Champion – Allison Chandler

 

Debbie Arsenault from the Grandview Golf Club fended off the field to finish the championship with a three day total of 249. Arsenault carded a final round of 87 today and won the 2019 NSGA Women’s Senior by three strokes.

 

Defending champion, Susan Tumblin from Oakfield, finished in second place with a 3-day total of 252. Rounding out the top three was Ashburn’s Joanie McCarville, who finished with a total of 254.
Debbie Walker from Paragon claimed top spot for division 2, finishing with a three-day total of 273.
Margaret McLean, of Ken-Wo, finished Overall Low Net for the Senior Championship.

Ross leads the MCT Men’s Amateur Championship heading into the final round

Calvin Ross from Fredericton, NB, increased his lead heading after the second round of the 2019 MCT Men’s Amateur Championship. The 2016 Canadian Junior Boys Champion fired a three under par 68. Ross who is a member of the Kingswood Golf Club has a two-day total of 137 (-5) heading into tomorrows final round at the Abercrombie Golf Club.

Brett MacKinnon from the Ashburn Golf Club tied for the low round today after also firing a three under par 68. The 2016 MCT Men’s Amateur Championship has a good history here at the Abercrombie Golf Club after winning the NSGA Junior Championship in 2012. The Glace Bay native grew up playing at Lingan, fired six birdies and three bogies on route to todays 68. McKinnon sits in second place with a two-day total of 143 heading into tomorrows final round.

Kevin George from the Lingan Golf Club is in third place heading into tomorrows final round. George carded three over par 74 and has a two-day total of 145.

The 2019 MCT Men’s Amateur Champion will receive an exemption into the HFX Pro-Am at the Oakfield Golf Club on July 18-19. Amateur’s will compete in a two round best ball competition during the first and second round. Competitors will be paired with a different pro each day. HFX Pro-Am is a stop on the MacKenzie Tour which is part of the PGA Tour Canada.

This competition will determine the provincial champion and select the team that will represent Nova Scotia at the 2019 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships. The Canadian Men’s Amateur will be held at the Glen Arbour Golf Club and Links of Brunello in Halifax on August 5-8. The top three golfers will be selected to represent Nova Scotia at this prestigious event. In addition there will also be 7 quota spots up for grabs to compete at the National Championship. These quota spots will be awarded based on results from the 2019 MCT Men’s Amateur.

Chandler & Arsenault Lead 2019 Women’s Championships

The heat did not back down as competitors battled through the second round of the NSGA Women’s Amateur and Senior Championships. The 14 Wing Greenwood, nicknamed ‘The Challenge’, held its title as players fought to defeat the conditions and the course.

The NSGA and competitors of the Women’s Amateur & Senior Championships would like to thank Wendy Sentner and TD Wealth in Halifax for their generous donation of water to help beat the heat.

Moving day at the Women’s Amateur Championship was an exciting one, with competitors shuffling around the leaderboard. Chester’s Allison Chandler took the lead with a +6, 79. This brought her two-day total to 162 (+16). The 2017 champion and is looking to capture her second NSGA Amateur title.

Meghan McLean of Ken-Wo and Julia Henderson of Abercrombie both sit at 165 (+19) and tied for second place heading into tomorrows final round. Sitting in 4th place is the younger McLean sister, Heather, who is looking to defend her 2018 title.

Debbie Arsenault of Grandview increased her lead after round two of the NSGA Women’s Senior Championship. After firing a steady round of +8, 80, for a two-day total of 162. Arsenault now has a 9-stroke cushion heading into tomorrows final round.
Karla Wilms of River Hills and Joanie McCarville of Ashburn currently sit tied for second at 171.

Margaret McLean of Ken-Wo and Paragon’s Debbie Walker are tied for lead in the second division, with a two-day total of 183. Greenwood’s Barbara Comeau sits 6 shots back in third.

Strong finish for Nova Scotians at the New Brunswick Junior 

Junior Development team member Haley Baker successfully defended her title at the New Brunswick Junior Championship. Haley won her first NBGA Junior Championship in 2018 and returned last week to the Hampton Golf Club to win her second title. The 17-year old Baker carded a three round total of 235 to win by five strokes over sister and fellow team member, Abbey Baker.

Abbey Baker successfully defended her title by winning the 2019 NBGA Bantam Championship. The fourteen year-old also added new hardware to her trophy case as she captured the 2019 NBGA Juvenile Championship.
Gavin Ives from Ashburn, won the NBGA Bantam Championship after finishing with a three day total of 247. The fourteen year-old, Middle Sackville native won by 18 strokes over Gowan Brae member Nicholas Colton.

All three competitors will be traveling to Truro next week to compete in the COBRA PUMA Junior Championship on July 9-11.

The first round of the 2019 NSGA Women’s Amateur & Senior Championships got underway today at 14 Wing Greenwood Golf Club. The tough conditions and the 38 degree temperatures tested competitors both physically and mentally. A true battle of attrition.


Round 1 leader Women’s AM – Cristal Romero

It is a close race for the Women’s Amateur Championship, with 5 competitors all within a few shots of first place. Grandview’s Cristal Romero leads the charge after firing a steady 8-over 81. The 2016 & 2017 Atlantic Women’s Amateur Champion looks to capture her first NSGA title.

Sitting one shot back is three-time Amateur Champion Julia Henderson of Abercrombie. A solid opening round after a few years away from the NS golf scene. Rounding out the top-3 is Allison Chandler of Chester, only 2-shots off the lead. The McLean sisters of Ken-Wo sit tied for 4th place.

 After round 1, Debbie Arsenault of Grandview sits atop the leaderboard of the Women’s Senior Championship. The 2017 champion fired an 8-over, 82, and has a  three shot lead over Paragon’s Leslie Houde and Ashburn’s Paulette Driscoll. The pair are tied at 11-over, 85.Leading Division 2 for the Women’s Senior is a different McLean from Ken-Wo. Margaret McLean fired a 16-over 90, and sits two shots ahead of Paragon’s Debbie Walker. Sitting tied for 3rd place in Division 2 are Greenwood’s own Barb Comeau, and Grandview’s Bertha Louise Myers.

Round 2 sets up to be an exciting “moving day,” as competitors will continue to battle the heat, and each other, out on the course.
