Cristal Romero and Debbie Arsenault Lead 2019 NSGA Women’s Amateur & Senior Championships

The first round of the 2019 NSGA Women’s Amateur & Senior Championships got underway today at 14 Wing Greenwood Golf Club. The tough conditions and the 38 degree temperatures tested competitors both physically and mentally. A true battle of attrition.

Round 1 leader Women’s AM – Cristal Romero

It is a close race for the Women’s Amateur Championship, with 5 competitors all within a few shots of first place. Grandview’s Cristal Romero leads the charge after firing a steady 8-over 81. The 2016 & 2017 Atlantic Women’s Amateur Champion looks to capture her first NSGA title.

Sitting one shot back is three-time Amateur Champion Julia Henderson of Abercrombie. A solid opening round after a few years away from the NS golf scene. Rounding out the top-3 is Allison Chandler of Chester, only 2-shots off the lead. The McLean sisters of Ken-Wo sit tied for 4th place.

Round 1 leader Women’s SR – Debbie Arsenault

After round 1, Debbie Arsenault of Grandview sits atop the leaderboard of the Women’s Senior Championship. The 2017 champion fired an 8-over, 82, and has a  three shot lead over Paragon’s Leslie Houde and Ashburn’s Paulette Driscoll. The pair are tied at 11-over, 85.Leading Division 2 for the Women’s Senior is a different McLean from Ken-Wo. Margaret McLean fired a 16-over 90, and sits two shots ahead of Paragon’s Debbie Walker. Sitting tied for 3rd place in Division 2 are Greenwood’s own Barb Comeau, and Grandview’s Bertha Louise Myers.

Round 2 sets up to be an exciting “moving day,” as competitors will continue to battle the heat, and each other, out on the course.
