The #GolfBeattieStrong Men’s Senior Championship honours the life and legacy of Garry Beattie, a longtime member of Ashburn Golf Club and a respected member of the Nova Scotia golf community.
Garry was known as a competitive golfer, but those who knew him remember him even more for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to give back to the game he loved. He served two terms as President of Golf Nova Scotia and was a dedicated member of Ashburn, always willing to lend a hand whenever he was asked.
Garry proudly represented Nova Scotia at the 2006 Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship and was a familiar face on many Ashburn Rose Bowl teams. Even after being diagnosed with brain cancer, Garry continued to play the game he loved. He made one final Rose Bowl team and helped lead Ashburn to victory over Brightwood.
Throughout his battle with cancer, Garry approached life with the same positive spirit that defined him. He inspired his friends, fellow golfers, and the staff at Ashburn through his strength, optimism, and determination.
His commitment to making a difference extended beyond the golf course. While battling cancer, Garry founded #GolfBeattieStrong, raising funds and awareness for brain cancer research in Nova Scotia and leaving a lasting impact far beyond the golf community.
As Gordie Smith of Ashburn Golf Club put it, Garry would undoubtedly be watching this past week’s championship from above, wishing he could be here competing, but more importantly, hoping everyone enjoys the week and the game he loved so much.
It is our honour to associate Garry’s name with the #GolfBeattieStrong Men’s Senior Championship. This championship celebrates not only senior golf in Nova Scotia, but the values Garry represented: competition, camaraderie, generosity, perseverance, and a love for the game.
